Application approval to burden consumers with additional Rs40bn, not applicable to KE

The electricity tariff is likely to see a raise of around Rs3.53 per unit.

The Central Power Purchasing Agency (CPPA) has submitted an application with the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) seeking an increase in the rates under fuel price adjustment.

In the event of approval, the decision will not be applicable to K-Electric consumers.

The government is all set to impose an additional burden of Rs40 billion on electricity consumers, as the CPPA has approached Nepra for an increase in electricity bills by Rs3.53 per unit.

NEPRA will hold a hearing on the application on November 29 on the application filed for monthly fuel adjustment in the October bills.

According to the application, the production cost of electricity in October was Rs11.42, while consumers were charged Rs7.89 per unit. The fuel adjustment for October comes out to be Rs3.50.

In October, the power generation from RLNG was over 20%, according to the NEPRA application.  Additional 7.34% electricity was generated from gas and 32% from hydel sources.

The approval of the application will place an additional burden of about Rs40 billion on electricity consumers but will not apply to K-Electric consumers.
